Visiting In October
October is an extremely busy time of year for Salem and a period of high visitation for Charter Street Cemetery. The number of visitors the cemetery sees in October is considerably higher than the entire population of Salem was at the time of the cemetery’s establishment. As such, in order to preserve this historic site, we do need to cap the number of visitors to the cemetery per day. Worry not, that cap is still over 1,000 daily visitors. A thousand-person line creates its own problems however, so October visitors will be required to make a digital reservation for the day of their visit.
Reservations to enter Charter Street Cemetery are free. Anyone who charges you to visit the cemetery is not affiliated with the City of Salem.
Time slots are every 15 minutes, beginning with first entry at 10:00AM. There is no time limit on visitation, although the cemetery does close at 5:00PM.
Reservations are only available for the day of your visit.
The entrance to Charter Street Cemetery does not have anywhere to wait beyond its busy sidewalk. If you arrive early, consider visiting the Witch Trial Memorial, located just around the corner.
The Charter Street Cemetery Welcome Center, located in the historic Pickman House, has more information on the cemetery and those interred within.
